What sorts of issues can American Atheists help with?
It can be difficult to know if every issue is a violation of your rights. You can report situations involving:
- Being treated differently or unfairly because of your atheism, nonreligion, or lack of belief — at work, school, housing, or in public accommodations
- Harassment or a hostile environment based on nonreligion in the workplace or at school
- Government officials or bodies promoting, endorsing, or funding religion
- Religious tests or litmus questions for public employment, office, or benefits
- Public school teachers, administrators, or staff pushing religion on students
- Unequal treatment of nonreligious individuals or groups compared to religious ones — including denial of equal access to public programs, spaces, or resources
- Government funding going to religious organizations for inherently religious activities
Not sure if your situation qualifies? Not every example above is illegal in every context, and there may be other situations not listed here that do raise legal concerns. Church-state law is nuanced, and the line between what’s permitted and what isn’t isn’t always obvious.
